Historical Jesus or Jesus Myth?

Historical Jesus or Jesus Myth: The Jesus Puzzle

Did Christianity begin with an historical Jesus or a Jesus myth? Was the original Jesus a man or a mythical savior god? Solving the Jesus Puzzle through the Christian and ancient-world record, from the Pauline epistles to the Gospels to the second century Christian apologists, from Philo to Josephus to Jewish and Hellenistic philosophy.

Christian faith evolved from a Jesus myth to an historical Jesus. New Testament scholarship needs to uncover that original evolution and rewrite the history of Western religion.

The results of your scholarship deserve the widest possible dissemination, and I hope against hope that your book will serve as a catalyst for opening some minds and putting truth in the spotlight. Long live rational thought!" (Bill, Reader Feedback 15)
"An excellent site. Easily the best example of independent scholarship on the Web." (Ian, Reader Feedback 16)

THE JESUS PUZZLE:
A Novel About the Greatest Question of our Time

My argument for the non-existence of an historical Jesus has been embodied in a contemporary novel about the state of secularism vs. fundamentalism at the end of the 20th century, and is now posted complete on the site. Direct access is provided to its individual components. Note that the novel files themselves (pdf) require the Adobe Acrobat Reader (a link is provided from the Introductory file to the Adobe site to download the Reader).

Note: This novel has now been published in Korean (by LeeGaSeo Publishing House, Seoul, South Korea) and in Spanish (by La Factoria de Ideas, Madrid, Spain); soon to be published in Portuguese.

Early Christian Writings
Peter Kirby has created a very useful web site filled with information on all the Christian texts of the first two centuries. There is an entry for each document which includes all the translations of that document that are online, all of the scholarly online resources that are available, and titles of relevant books as well as commentary and quotes provided by Kirby that detail the dating, provenance, and significance of the work.
Early Christian Writings
Kirby has also written an essay on the authenticity of the references to Jesus in Josephus and a survey of various contemporary theories about the historical Jesus. He also has a web site devoted to the Gospel of Thomas, and has developed a sister site for Early Jewish Writings.
Finally, Kirby is editing a web site called "Did Jesus Exist?" for essays on Christian origins, which welcomes contributions from various points of view.

A Compelling Exercise in Radical Criticism
Despite all efforts of historical criticism during the past two centuries, the origins of Christianity remain hidden in deep darkness. Even modern research has not been successful in throwing full light upon them. According to Radical Criticism, this is due to the fact that the decisive presuppositions of previous work on the history of early Christianity have never been questioned methodically. This is true especially for the supposed genuineness of important documents of early Christianity as, for example, the Ignatian letters, 1 Clement and all of Paul’s Epistles. Radical Criticism has shown that their genuineness has by no means been firmly established. Nor can the human Jesus of Nazareth as a figure of history be regarded as a self-evident basic assumption.
Following the footsteps of the German critic Bruno Bauer and of the Dutch Radical School (W.C. Van Manen, G.A. van den Bergh van Eysinga), Radical Criticism tries to excavate the roots of early Christanity without any ecclesiastical or ideological bias.
