Lincoln and Kennedy: Bound by coincidence

Yesterday while I was in the Library, I spotted a rather large and colorful book. Upon further inspection I found out that it was titled: Ripley's Believe it or Not. I had seen the TV show and eagerly checked it out.

When I started reading the book, it fascinated me. Robert Ripley was a person who made a living by finding "exotic" abnormalities in the world. As I read on I found strange facts like the headless hen and Bozo the mind reading dog. I knew that this was real because not only were these broadcasted on TV, but had real pictures!

One of the greatest unexplained phenomena was the strange relationships between President J.F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln.

Consider these strange facts:

  • Both Kennedy and Lincoln were deeply involved in the civil rights issues of the era, in Lincoln's day, the issue was slavery, in Kennedy's, it was segregation.
  • Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was born in 1839. Kennedy's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was born in 1939, a hundred years later.
  • Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy who warned him not to go to the theater the night he was killed. Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln who warned him not to go to Dallas where he was killed.
  • Both were shot on Friday.
  • Both were shot from behind.
  • Both wives were present.
  • Booth shot Lincoln in a theater and ran into a warehouse; Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and ran into a theater.
  • Both were succeeded by men named Johnson
  • Both Johnsons were democrats from the south.
  • The Johnson who succeeded Lincoln was born on 1808; the Johnson who suceeded Kennedy was born on 1908.
  • Both presidents' names contain 7 letters, their successors' names contain 13 letters, there assassins contain 15 letters.
